CHAPTER 16

Colligate (v.) – To bind, unite or group together

We didn’t have long to wait until the drama kicked off again. We had left the sandboarding site with everyone in surprisingly high spirits and were racing across uneven rocks at full speed. D-Dawg was blatantly loving making the women scream as he soared over high mounds. I swear I saw him licking his lips at Jade’s breasts that jiggled over every bump in his rear-view mirror. Then, out of nowhere and with a noisy bang D-Dawg’s jeep spluttered to a stop.

‘Uh-oh,’ he muttered.

‘Uh-oh? What do you mean, uh-oh?’ A prickly sensation shot down my spine as I looked around at where we were. There wasn’t a living thing as far as the eye could see. I glanced over my shoulder at the back of the truck but everyone else appeared oblivious to our situation as they chatted away and took selfies of each other’s sand-blasted faces.

Dwayne was twisting the key in the ignition with as much force as he could without it snapping.

‘Dwayne…have we broken down?’ I asked, terrified of the answer he was going to give.

He turned to face me. His previous grin had blown away into a pale and pinched frown. ‘Ah. Well.’ He scratched his head bashfully. ‘Yeah, it looks that way.’

‘What?’ I hissed. ‘We are in the middle of the flipping desert and we’ve broken down!’

Okay, maybe I hadn’t said this as quietly as I thought I had.

‘What’s going on?’ Tony shouted from the back.

‘Everything okay, Georgia?’ Ben called.

I glanced at Dwayne who had leapt out of the driver’s seat and was struggling to get the bonnet open. ‘I think we’ve broken down.’

‘Whaaaaaat?’ Cries rang from the back of the truck mimicking my own shocked outburst. Clive had put his camera down and was wiping a sheen of sweat from his face with his T-shirt, Jade thirstily chugged on a bottle of water, Gareth wrung his hands together, and Anna’s face had paled under all her make-up.

Ben and Tony were the only ones to instantly jump down onto the rocky ground and race over to help Dwayne figure out the problem. I nervously bit my fingernails as we waited for their verdict.

‘Oh my God, we’re screwed. We’re going to die!’ Jade wailed, unable to keep a lid on her emotions. Although we were probably all thinking the same thing, this wasn’t helping.

‘Shut up,’ Dawn hissed as she fanned her flushed cheeks.

‘I won’t shut up! Look around! There ain’t nobody for miles. Oh my God this is a disaster. I never even got to own a pug puppy or pass my driving test.’ Jade continued to cry before shoving her head in Gareth’s chest looking for some form of comfort. He awkwardly patted her skinny back that was shaking with the heavy sobs.

‘I’d try and calm down if I were you. We probably don’t have that much water left and you’ll only make yourself even more dehydrated,’ Natalia whispered.

I spotted Anna nudge Clive and hiss that he needed to be capturing all of this on camera.
